Self Assessment

Expert Guidance Every Step of the Way

Self Assessment Overview

Self Assessment is the system used by HM Revenue & Customs to collect Income Tax. It is predominantly aimed at individuals but businesses can also declare their profits or loss through Self Assessment, whose tax isn't deducted automatically via PAYE. This is most often used for the self-employed, company directors, landlords and many more who receive income that has not had tax deducted. This is a Self Assessment tax return that needs to be completed on an annual basis to declare your income, expenses, capital gains, and other financial details relevant to you as a taxpayer.
HMRC works out how much tax is due according to this return or it can be calculated by the taxpayer before submission. The deadlines for filing your tax return are 31 October for paper returns and 31 January for online submissions and payment of any tax due. If these deadlines are not met, penalties and interest will be applied. Accurate record keeping throughout your trading year is necessary to remain compliant and to claim any of costs which you are allowed.
